Read the Order Carefully
Protective orders can include different restrictions depending on the case.
For example, the order may prohibit you from:
- Contacting the protected person
- Returning to your home
- Going near certain places, such as a home, workplace, or school
- Possessing firearms in some situations
Make sure you understand exactly what the order requires. If you have questions, ask your attorney before taking any action.
Do Not Contact the Protected Person
One of the most common mistakes people make is assuming it’s okay to communicate if the other person reaches out first.
In many cases, it is still your responsibility to obey the protective order. Even if the protected person wants to talk or invites you to meet, you could still face legal consequences if you violate the order.
Follow Every Court Requirement
In addition to the protective order, you may also have bond conditions or upcoming court dates.
Be sure to attend every required hearing and comply with all court orders. Failing to do so can result in additional penalties or changes to your release conditions.
